He was married to Mary Elizabeth (Tool) Scobell on August 7, 1865, and they were together until Mary's death on April 5, 1891 in Gladwin County, Michigan United States. He had children Pierette Retta Rice, Mary E Rice, Margaret Elizabeth "Hattie" Rice, William Newton Rice, James William Rice, Rose Edith Rice, and Calvin Corwin Rice. William Rice died at age 65 years old on July 28, 1906 at Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA.

In 1841, in the year that William Rice was born, on August 16th, President John Tyler vetoed a bill to re-establish the Second Bank of the United States - America's Central Bank. President Jackson had previously dissolved the bank and Tyler's veto angered the Whig Party (his own party). Rioters gathered outside the White House and burned Tyler in effigy, threw stones at the White House, and fired guns. It may have been the most violent demonstration on White House grounds in U.S. history.
