    The Star Beacon; Ashtabula, Ohio September 5, 2011 William R. Icely Star Beacon AUSTINBURG — William R. Icely, age 86, passed away Wednesday evening, August 31, 2011, at Austinburg Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, with his daughter, Lori at his side. Bill was born Oct. 21, 1924, in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Frank P. and Evelyn (nee: Smith) Icely. He had been a resident of Ashtabula for most of his life. After graduating from high school, he proudly served in the U.S. Merchant Marines as a AB Seaman during WWII, until he was Honorably Discharged. Bill was a master carpenter in the area and continued his education taking accounting at the Joint Vocational School until moving to Florida where he was employed as a building engineer for numerous banks in the Sarasota, Fla. area until he retired. Upon “retirement” he and his wife, Marcella moved back to Ashtabula to be closer to their grandchildren. He was then employed with the Ashtabula Area School District as a crossing guard until he finally retired when he was 76 years old. In his spare time, he and his wife, Marcella enjoyed camping with their daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Jerry Ferl at Buccaneer Campgrounds in Jefferson, Ohio. He enjoyed fishing, and shooting rockets with his grandchildren, Mark, Jerry II and Mandy Ferl. He also enjoyed hunting, gun collecting and flying. Bill was a wonderful loving husband, father and grandfather. Deeply loved by his family and all of his “special” girls at the Austinburg Nursing Home. He was a member of the VFW and the Carpenters Union. He is survived by his three children, William R. Icely II of Sarasota, Fla., Diane M. Chareese and Lori G. (Jerry) Ferl; grandchildren, Jerry M. Ferl II, Amanda N. Ferl Housman (Patrick), William Icely III and Shawn Icely; 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Karen (Don) Whitehill. He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 60 years, Marcella in 2004; grandson, Mark William Ferl in 2006; brother, Harold Icely; and a sister, Dorothy Barbour. Following cremation a Private Family Service will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 6th, at the convenience of the family. In keeping with Bill’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to CHILDS & WILLIAMS FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 1440 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. Obituary and condolences at starbeacon.com.
