  • Introduction

William Schaal was married first to Jeanette, who died in about 1941. They had two daughters: Nenette, who died approximately 1935 of pneumonia, and Wilma, who died in the 1920's of tuberculosis. During the Depression in the 1930's William and Jeanette were living in Philadelphia and operating a successful business. They lost nearly everything due to the economy, and moved to a summer cottage that they owned in Falls Township, Bucks County, on Bristol Pike/Route 13. William found work as a crane operator for the Baldwin Locomotive Co. in Philadelphia. William was a skilled hobbyist landscaper, and his work attracted the notice of the landscaper who was responsible for providing the plant and tree materials for the huge Levittown development that was being built across the highway. The landscaper saw that the property (approximately 10 acres) was ideal for a nursery, and made William an offer that he could not refuse. William and Jeanette then built their new house nearby at 9003 Mill Creek Road, which had a Levittown address, but was not a Levitt-built house. After his first wife's death, William married Minnie, who survived him. The Ella Richite listed in William's obituary as a "daughter" was actually Minnie's daughter from another marriage.
