His father Robert Selway Buffham was born on January 20, 1868 in Racine, Racine, Wisconsin, United States and passed away there on November 19, 1949. His mother Emma Henrietta Metz was born on April 16, 1869 in Frankfort, Frankfurt am Main, Hessen, Germany and immigrated to the US in 1877. She married Robert on October 11, 1900 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois and then lived in Racine, Wisconsin, USA. Emma passed away in Racine on May 14, 1958.

The couple resided in Racine, WI until 1999 when they then moved to Ironwood, Michigan to be closer to family. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at the Gogebic County Club. Throughout his life, Bill was an athlete, playing basketball, baseball, and hand-ball. He was a charter member of Meadowbrook Town and Country Club in Racine. His membership lasted for 48 years before retiring from golf at age 89. An active mind kept him involved in politics all of his life.

    William S. 'Bill' Buffham IRONWOOD, MICH. William S. 'Bill' Buffham, 97, formerly of Racine, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 14, 2006, in Ironwood, Mich. He was born in Racine on July 15, 1908, son of the late Robert S. and Emma (nee: Metz) Buffham. On November 19, 1955, he was united in marriage to Ann E. Orthey in Racine at St. John's Lutheran Church. They resided in Racine until 1999, when they retired to be close to family members in Ironwood, Mich. In 2005, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends at Gogebic Country Club. During World War I while in the United States Army, he was stationed in South America for 48 months. He was a member of the American Legion Post 310 in Racine for 61 years. Throughout his life, Bill was an athlete, playing basketball, baseball, and hand-ball. He was a charter member of Meadowbrook Town and Country Club in Racine. His membership lasted for 48 years before retiring from golf at age 89. An active mind kept him involved in politics all of his life. Surviving are his wife, Ann; one son, Edward R. (Linda) Groenke of Albuquerque, N.M.; a daughter, Carole J. (Larry) Scheel of Ironwood, Mich.; seven granddaughters, Christine (Michael) Holmes of Ironwood, Mich., Jennifer Scheel of Franks-Ami Brown of Ironwood, Mich., Melissa Scheel of Boulder Junction, Dawn (David) Skaar of Raleigh, N.C., , Danene Groenke of Cary, N.C., and Danielle Groenke of Durham, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Jason Holmes, Courtney Holmes, Joshua Brown, Cassandra Skaar, and Garrett Skaar; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ironwood, Mich. on Wednesday, January 18, 2006, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Tim Coppersmith officiating. William's family will receive visitors at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions are preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of one's choice. Condolences may be sent to William's family at 635 East McLeod, Ironwood, Mich. 49938.
