He married Frances Cantreva on July 20, 1947 at Saint Catherines New Hyde Park Road, in Franklin Square, Nassau County, and had children Francis Cantreva and Anthony Cantreva. Joe Cantreva died at age 51 years old on February 5, 1972 at Sunny Side Railroad yard Queens NY, and was buried on January 7, 1972 at long island national cemetery wellwood ave farmingdale ny usa.
