He had siblings Eliza Ann Shackelton, Matilda Louisa Maude Shackelton, Euphemia Hettie May Shackleton, Matilda Louisa Maude Shackleton, Jarvis Ridger Shackleton, and Mary Jane (Shackleton) Stone. William Shackleton died at age 74 years old in 1949 in Chelt.

In 1875, in the year that William Thomas Shackleton was born, on February 21st, Jeanne Calment was born in southern France. Her father was a shipbuilder and her mother was from a family of millers. She died August 4th, 1997 of natural causes - the world's oldest documented person to have ever lived - at the age of 122 years and 164 days.

In 1918, when he was 43 years old, on November 11th, an armistice was signed between the Allies and Germany, ending the fighting on the Western Front in World War I. This meant a complete defeat of Germany although Germany never formally surrendered. It took another six months of negotiations to sign an actual peace treaty between the warring parties.
