William Thomas Spikin of Portland Australia was born in 1870 in Portland to John George Spikins and Hannah (Harland) Spikin. He had siblings John George Spikin, Hannah Spikin, Henry Spikin, Alice Spikin, James Edward Spikin, Fanny Ann Spikin, Charles Arthur Spikin, Ernest Wells Spikin, and Mary Jane Spikin McLaren Jenkins. William Spikin married Annie Louisa Dwyer in 1932, and died at age 79 years old in 1949 in Cfld.

In 1870, in the year that William Thomas Spikin was born, on March 31st, Thomas Mundy Peterson was the first African-American male who voted in an election - a local election about the town charter. Peterson, a school principal, was also the first to hold elected office and the first to sit on a jury.

In 1886, when he was 16 years old, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. A small brush fire got out of control and spread to the rest of the city. Dozens of people died and it was only after the fire that money was raised for a fire hall. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.
