I was in 4th grade at Washington Elementary in 1976. Mrs. Newton was my teacher. I'm from England and was only in the school that grade. She was wonderful, she made the adjustment to a different education system much smoother, and was always kind and caring. When I first starter we had a substitute teacher (who was not so kind!), so I presume Mrs Newton had been ill at that time. It made such a difference to my time at the school when she came back. Before I left to come back to the UK, she invited me and my mum to her house. I believe she lived alone, and had no children. She had a huge pecan tree, and we came away laden down with pecans. She wrote to me several times, but I'm ashamed to say, after several years, I stopped replying. I've often thought about her, and the difference she made to my happiness that year.
