Zenobia Ethelyn (McGee) Clayton was born to William McGee (1872 - 1968) and Mary E. McGee 1876 - 1954). Both of her parents were born in Mississippi. She had ten siblings: Lenolia, Portia, Clifton A., Veronica, Cysta, Willimine, Charrity, Zerta W., William Jr., and Clothilde McGee. She also had a half-brother, Dewey I. McGee. Zenobia McGee married James C. Clayton (1902 - 1997) and they had one daughter, Jamesena Wilhelmina Clayton (1927 - 1997). Zenobia was a distinguished teacher with a long list of accomplishments. Born and raised in Mississippi, Zenobia died in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at the age of 91. She is buried in New Welcome Hill Cemetery, Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Zenobia earned a bachelor's degree in education from Alcorn College and a master's degree in education from New York University. In addition, she received a certificate of advance study in education while working on her doctorate at New York University.

Zenobia became a member of Holmes Chapel United Methodist Church in Pearlington at an early age, and then became a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Wiggins. Mississippi.

She began her teaching career at Stone County Training School, later known as Locker High, Stone High School and Booker T. Consolidated School for Vets in Bond. She also taught on the Gulf Coast and later returned to Stone County as principal of Booker T. Consolidated School for Vets and Locker High School. She retired from the school system in March 1968, but not from teaching after her retirement, she received a STAR Teacher Award from the Mississippi Economic Council - the State Chamber of Commerce during a "This is Your Life" Program. She also recieved an award for her outstanding teaching from the Vice President Herbert Humphrey.

Over the years, Zenobia served in the following positions at her church: Sunday School teacher, lay leader, superintendent, secretary of the Sunday School, secretary for the United Methodist women and pianist. She also was involved in community affairs for many years and taught music to many children in the Stone County area. She was a charter member of the Z.E. Clayton Federation Club of Colored Women, which presented more than 30 scholarships to Stone High School students; a charter member of the Retired Teachers Association of Stone County; a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the American Association for Retired Persons. She also was a volunteer member of the Stone County Hospital Auxiliary Club. Zenobia married James C. Clayton and they had one daughter, Jamesena Wilhelmina Clayton (1927 - 1997). he was survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

ZENOBIA E. CLAYTON Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion United Methodist Church for Zenobia E. Clayton, 91, of Wiggins, who died May 11, 1993, at Methodist Hospital in Hattiesburg. The Reverend Robert Pittman will officiate. Interment will be in New Welcome Hill Cemetery. Mrs. Clayton eared a bachelor's degree in education from Alcorn College and a master's degree in education from New York University. In addition, she received a certificate of advance study in education while working on her doctorate at New York University.
