to me

Good afternoon, Mr. Ian Oliver Martin!

Thank you for your enquiry about your ancestor, Archibald Stark.

A student by the name of Archibald Stark matriculated (registered) at the University on the 27th February 1702. You can view an entry about his matriculation on page 174 of the 'Munimenta Alme Universitatis Glasguensis' which is available to view online free of charge on the Internet Archive: .

Here, his name is written in its Latinised form as 'Archibaldus Stark' under the heading: 'Nomina discipulorum in tertia classe qui hoc Anno Academiam ingressi fuerunt sub praesidio Magistri Joannis Tran' which roughly translates to 'the names of the students in the third class who entered the academy under the tutelage of Master John Tran.' This suggests that Archibald Stark began his studies in 1699; matriculation was not compulsory until 1858, so students did not always matriculate in their first year of study. Since a nationality is not listed beside Archibald Stark's entry, this would normally indicate that he was Scottish.

From the foundation of the University until 1727 the teaching was in the hands of the regents. There were normally four regents, each of whom taught one year of students throughout the curriculum. John Tran served as a regent at the University of Glasgow from 1669, and the curriculum for the Master of Arts at this time included five years of study in Latin, Greek, Logic, Moral Philosophy, Natural Philosophy (Physics) and/or Mathematics.

According to our records, Archibald Stark did not graduate. There is no recorded reason for this, but some possible explanations would be:
- letters of recommendation from his professors were enough so he did not need to go to the added expense of graduating. The graduation certificate was not as important at that time as it is today.
- that he came from a religious background which meant he preferred not to take a graduation oath that referred to the Church of Scotland
- he took some classes here but graduated from another University or College
- that he was unable to pass the required examinations

We are not able to supply copies of the original documents as the copying process would damage the fragile parchment. However, if you ever plan to be in Glasgow and would like to see the originals we would be happy to show you those which are not too fragile to be produced - go to and book for our Thurso St site.

I hope that this information has been helpful!

Kind regards,

Sorrel
