Bruce Reynolds Alger
US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served the State of Texas' 5th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives (1955 to 1965). Alger will perhaps be best remembered for his instigation of hostilities towards then-Vice Presidential candidate Lyndon Johnson in 1960. The incident in which Johnson and his wife Lady Bird were harassed during their visit to Dallas became known as the "Mink Coat Riot", as the aggressors consisted mainly of women. He attended Princeton University where he played collegiate football and during World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater as a commander of a B-29 with the United States Army Air Corps. Following his return home, he made a name for himself in the real estate industry. During his tenure in Washington, he established himself as an extreme conservative who opposed any progressive ideas the Johnson Administration implemented which included increase of Social Security benefits and Medicare. After leaving the government, he returned to his real estate business. He died from heart related issues.
