Charles Cole was John Stewart's adopted son, unofficially adopted. Charles Cole was an orphan at Hope Haven orphanage in Marrero Louisiana when John Stewart was a sheriff's deputy. Charles had run away from the orphanage several times and had been returned, the last time he ran away John Stuart just took them home and raised them as his own. Charles went by Charles Stuart until he returned from World War II.
