My Grandpa was a quiet man yet it seemed like he always know the answer to any question. He was hit by a car at the age of 10 and almost died. He was unable to go to school for over a year. He also had a stroke at the age of 28 and I think that affected his life profoundly. (Probably a result of the car accident when he was young.) I can still remember my Gram telling me about how handsome he was. I remember him well but I wasn't really old enough to know him as I would have liked. He grew up on a farm with 4 brothers and 1 sister. His father John Henry was a Truck farmer as was his uncle George and they had property on each side of Dettman Road in Jackson, Mi. John Henry and George had a brother Christian who died in 1890 at the age of 15. He was a very hard worker and he had a huge appetite. I can remember him eating 4 hamburgers for dinner ( my gram would wrap them in waxed paper) they were delicious! He loved the outdoors and he loved to walk for miles. On these walks he would pick up things that other people lost or discarded. One time he collected 50 coke caps for me, the old metal ones so I could get a t shirt, long before it became common. He loved his junk and he made a lot of money from it too. I am told that he read the Bible twice yet he was not convinced about being a Christian. My Gram said that he refused to be called by his given name, he was always called Chris. He wanted to join up during WW ll but was rejected because of his medical history. I remember seeing him not long before he died and thinking that he looked tired and he looked like he didn't feel well. I think that his back must have hurt him badly for he walked kind of hunched over. I;'m sure that he had other health issues as well. He was a big man 6' 2" and over 200 lbs. but he never quit walking or collecting his junk. I miss him terribly...
