US Congressman, US Army Brigadier General. Born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, before entering politics, he was a career US Army officer. He began his military career being commissioned a Lieutenant in the 3rd Infantry in 1808, promoted Captain in 1810, appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 43rd Regiment, US Infantry in 1813 and appointed Colonel in command of the 8th Regiment, US Infantry, in 1819. Promoted Brigadier General on April 20, 1829, he commanded corps at the Battle of Ouithlacoochee against the Seminole Indians, in December 1835. He resigned from the US Army on September 21, 1836 and settled on a plantation near St. Marys, Georgia. In 1844, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Millen and served until 1845. He died at age 61 in Macon, Georgia.
