Mother and her two sons (yep, despite the bow) 1890 Iowa.
PS: The Daniels boys mother, Elizabeth Mallory Daniels, died of TB in 1891 and father Henry Brown Daniels moved to a farm outside of Elwood NE. With the approach of WWI the boys moved to British Columbia where Jasper became a forest ranger and timber cruiser....Daniels River named after him and Lois Lake after his daughter) Henry owned a restaurant and like his father became a dog trainer... he trained one for Betty Davis. Jasper's son Jasper Mallory Daniels Jr became a famous wooden ship builder and self-trained artist. He changed his name to Allen Farrell in 1955. Two books have been written about his life, Sailing Back in Time and Salt on the Wind. He is in the encyclopedia of Canada and his art may be viewed by googling allen Farrell. He died in Mar 2002.

Elizabeth was the mother. Henry and Jasper were the boys. So it was indeed a mother and two sons. 🙂
Ami Wilber-Mosher , you are correct! My mistake.

What was the reason to dress boys like girls back then?

To make it easier to change their diaper and clean them up. They wore dresses until they were toilet trained then they went into pants.

I have been blessed to have a few family pictures from over 100 years ago. The boys had very short hair or a Dutch boy hair cut, big wide collars but never dresses. Interesting.
This is my oldest son @ age 4 in '81. It was a popular cut back then.

So do I, very common in the old days. Just like ladies having to wear hair parted in the middle and into a bun in the back, not allowed to cut it due to rules made up by men!

Before there were rubber pants little boys wore dresses for quicker diaper changes and the pants would have needed to be changed as well. Can you imagine doing that much laundry by hand?
