He served as vice president of the Burton Heights Businessman's association. Learned the workings of the Grand Rapids city government, methods for securing improvements for that part of the city, etc.

Elmer followed his father, a business man and teaching experience. He attended college at Michigan Agricultureal college, East Lansing. Upon graduating he returned to his home in Orleans, MI.
