Evelyn Hampton was born in a barn in the Cecil Township (Inman Branch) in Canton, NC. She was a twin, and had a secret twin sister that had been given away at birth by their mother, unbeknownst to either of them. She later found out about this twin in 2005, and was able to locate her. Her name was Mae (Mintz) Mathis. Evelyn was born and raised into poverty and remained in poverty throughout her entire life. But what she lacked in finances, she more than made up for with the richness of her love! She married Orse Hampton at the young age of 15 at the old courthouse in Walhalla, SC in September of 1953. Together they had 5 children, and one miscarriage. She was killed as a passenger in an automobile accident in Shooting Creek, NC on a visit with some family out of town.
