He married Clara Genevieve (Evans) Smibert on December 6, 1920, and had children Donald James Smibert and Kelvin Stuart Smibert. Ewen Smibert died at age 83 years old on August 24, 1981 in Mount Eliza, and was buried at New Cheltenham Cemetery in Cheltenham, Bayside City County.
