Scarborough - Francis Michael "Frank" McDonald, passed away September 17, 2018, in Portland, at the age of 85 after a brief illness. Frank was born June 22, 1933, in Portland, Maine, the youngest son of the late John and Margaret (Brogan) McDonald. Frank graduated from Cheverus High School in 1951. After graduation he worked for G. E. in Portland. In 1953 he enlisted in the United States Army, attending basic training at Fort Dix, NJ, and shipped out on the S. S. Bruckner, headed for Bremerhaven, Germany. He was stationed in Berlin, Germany Headquarters Company 7781 Army Unit. He was part of the occupation force in Berlin and worked in Zehlendorf, the Berlin Command Office. While in Berlin, he traveled throughout Europe and his cherished Ireland where he visited Kiltumper, Kilmihil, his mother's birthplace. Frank was honorably discharged from the Army in 1956. He retired as District Manager of Operations from New England Telephone & Telegraph in 1990 after 37 years. Frank had many interests, first and foremost his family. He was the proud patriarch and will be remembered for his love of golf, reading, crossword puzzles and attention to detail, all traits of a well-respected and loved man. His family's favorite memories are Sunday dinners featuring his famous baseball-size meatballs, and the tradition of vacationing at Higgins Beach, Scarborough, which began when his children were young and continues through three generations. After retirement, Frank was a mainstay at Willowdale Golf Club in Scarborough as a member, employee, tournament director and rules official. Frank was predeceased by his siblings, John, Virginia Kandola, Joseph, Margaret LaRose and James. Frank is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Katherine (Naples) McDonald; his 6 children: Erin McDonald of Charlestown, MA, Stephanie Hurley and husband David of Kingston, MA, Mary Powers and husband Mark of Duxbury, MA, Jacqueline Caron and husband James of Gorham, and twin sons Sean of Swampscott, MA, and Michael of Biddeford. He was the beloved "Papa" to nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visiting Hours celebrating Frank's life will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2018 from 2-6 P.M. at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. on Monday at St. Maximillian Kolbe Church, 150 Black Point Road, Scarborough. Military Honors will follow.
