World War II United States Army General. Commissioned into the United States Army in August 1917, he would go on to serve in France during World War I as an officer in the 77th Field Artillery, participating in the July to August 1918 Aisne-Marne Offensive, and the September to November Meuse-Argonne Offensive. He remained in the Army after the war, eventually graduating in 1936 from the Command and General Staff School, and the War College in 1940. After the United States entered World War II, he served as a regimental commander in the 5th Armored Division until August 1942, when he was advanced to command the 9th Armored Division's Combat Command "A" after being promoted to Brigadier General. He served in that duty until June 1943, when he was assigned to command Combat Command "B", then serving in the North African Campaign. After the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasions of France's Normandy Beaches, he was assigned to the staff of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, serving as Chief of Public Relations until July 1945. His last War related command was as commander of the 3rd Armored Division, which he led from July 1945 until November 1945. He would continue serving in the Army in the Korean War with the 1st Cavalry Division, and retired in 1956 with the rank of Major General.
