George Eliot Eliott (1817 - 1901) Came to New Zealand by ship "Portentia" arriving in Bay of Islands in August 1838.After a trip to Australia he returned to New Zealand in March 1841, and interred the Civil Service at Auckland Particulars of Service: March 1841 - Clerk Colonial Secretary’s Office, Auckland July 1856 - Chief Clerk, Colonial Secretary’s Office, Sept 1862 - Secretary General Post Office, Auckland
In 1863 he was sent to Sydney to recruit Soldiers for the military settlements in Auckland , a task which he accomplished with great credit. He moved to Wellington with the Government in 1864 and became: Secretary General Post Office, Wellington . He retired on Superannuation in 1872 and went to England . He returned to New Zealand in 1876. and took up residence at Dunedin , where he took great interest in Local Government, as a representative of Leith Ward in the Dunedin City Council; and in Church work as a Lay reader - All Saints Anglican. He married in 1841 Catherine Lavinia Morne by whom he had a family of seven sons and three daughters. His wife having died in 1883 he remarried in 1884 Mrs. Levien of Nelson. Catherine Lavinia Morne, born 1st May 1822, when George Eliot Eliott went to Australia in 1840, he brought her back with him, and they were married in Auckland on September 21st 1841. She died in 1883
