Part of the crypt's inscription:
“THE FAMILY OF HALKETT OF PITFIRRANE....IN FIFE IN THE REIGN OF DAVID THE 2ND 1329-1370 AND TO HAVE ACQUIRED ITS FIRST THIRD OF PITFIRRANE IN 1399. FRIARS HELD BEING MEMBERS OF THE FAMILY BEGINNING WITH THAT OF SHERIFF OF KINROSS IN 1372 ARE TO NUMEROUS TO MENTION. SEVERAL MEMBERS WERE KNIGHTED BY THE KING AND ONE CREATED A BARONET OF NOVA SCOTIA THROUGHOUT THE OPERATIONS OF THE FAMILY HAS BEEN SERVED THE COUNTRY BY LAND AND SEA AND ADDED LUSTRE TO THE NAME WHICH WILL NOT SOON BE FORGOTTEN.'
