Harold Foss Bates was the 13th living child born to Fannie Mae Bryant Bates and Willie Hiram Bates, of Worcester/Goshen, Massachusetts. He was raised in Compton, California and lived there the majority of his life, even after marrying. He and his wife, Elizabeth (Betty, as she was known to us), lived on Golden St. in Compton, prior to their move to the Los Altos area of Long Beach. He was a hard worker, a sports fan, a good provider, father, brother and uncle. He worked during the depression with the CCC. He enjoyed working with wood and building things. He was very handy around the home. He, like many of his brothers, were the main "father figures" in my life growing up and I'll be forever thankful to have had him there to show me what being a father was really about.
