Henry Little Griggs Jr was known by the nickname Harry. Harry Griggs had two younger brothers named Edward and Thomas Griggs. After serving in World War II, he graduated from Yale University in 1949. In September 1953 he married Lynne Patrick (Griggs) in Madison, CT (born Sept 9, 1932). They had three children together: Henry, Elisabeth and Peter Griggs.
