He is full-blooded Blackfoot Indian according to his grandson, Edward Francis Barteau. Johno, as he was called, was born in St. Charles, Missouri to Emilie Sedilot dit Montreuil and Jean Baptiste Janeaux. He died in Florissant, Missouri on 19 Dec 1906 and is buried in St. Ferdinand's Cemetery there. He married Louise Thibault on 25 Aug 1846 in Florissant.
