Jewell's parents were Larry P Jung (1909 - 1991) and Edna H Bleise (1905 - 1996). He had one sister, Darlene Natalie Jung (1935 - 2006). In the 1950 federal census, Jewell was age 16 and living with his parents Larry, age 41, and Edna, age 39, in Carroll Iowa. Also in the household was sister Darlene, age 14. Father Larry was the proprietor of (unreadable). Both parents were born in Wisconsin, both children were born in Iowa. In Spring of 1954, the Carroll Daily Times Herald carried an announcement of Jewell's marriage to Arlene Mills. The ceremony took place on October 24, 1953 in Lexington Missouri and the article called the marriage "secret". Jewell was a graduate of Wentworth Military Academy and Junior College in Lexington Missouri and was attending the University of Iowa when the announcement was made. Children born of this marriage were Julie, Penny, and Pam. In addition to owning and operating his own business (prior to retiring), Jewell was active in his community. He was a past president of Carroll Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club. He was also a board member of Iowa Bakers Society and had served on the Carroll Airport Commission. He had received the Governor's Award for Volunteerism in 1999.

We used to be known as the "Valley of Heart's Delight" (because the Valley was covered with orchards and there were many canneries to process the food grown here, which shipped all over the US) - now we have adopted the nickname "Capital of Silicon Valley" and Apple, Ebay, Adobe, Netflix, Facebook, and many more tech companies are within a few miles of my current home in San Jose (including AncientFaces). From a small town of 25,000, we have grown to 1 million plus. And when you add in all of the communities surrounding us (for instance, Saratoga, where I attended high school, living a block from our previous Mayor), we are truly one of the big cities in the US.
