Joada was the daughter of Joseph Henry Painter Day and Ada Boyle Day hence her name Joada. She had a twin bother James Boyle Day who could not see, hear or walk and died in 1912 when he was three years old. When she was 13 years old, her mother died in her arms in the back seat of a car in San Bernadino, CA while her father was driving to a hospital. Joada worked for the State Relief Administration of Oakland, California and was fired along with many others for refusing to answer the question submitted by the Yorty Committee, "Are you a member of the communist party?" She later became the Oregon State Vice-Chairperson of the Democratic Party. She was married to Melvin Perdue Leonard and had two sons, Thomas Joseph Leonard and James Melvin Leonard.
