Lawrence Calvert Putgenter was born in Catonsville, MD. He is named after his uncle, John Calvert O'Connor (1898-1968). He is the eldest son of Joseph Alphonsus Putgenter and Louetta Estelle O'Connor. He served in World War II as part of a bombing crew. He worked in the plumbing industry and became the president of a local company. He retired and enjoyed playing golf.
