US Army Brigadier General and nurse. Dunlap joined the US Army Nurse Corps in 1942 and served with the 59th Station Hospital in the Pacific Theater throughout WWII. Later, rising to the rank of brigadier general and being made chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps, In 1973, she was the first woman in the history of the United States Army to serve as president of a Department of the Army Officer promotion board. Dunlap received numerous military awards, including the Distinguished Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with an oak leaf cluster, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four battle stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one battle star. After she retired in 1975, she founded the Retired Army Nurse Corps Association, based in San Antonio. She was also the founder and president of Fort Sam Houston's Army Medical Department Museum. Dunlap has served on the boards of the United Way, the Texas Governor's Commission for Women, the National Bank of Fort Sam Houston, the GPM Life Insurance Company Board of Directors, and the Texas National Guard Armory Board. She was honored by the American Academy of Nursing, the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame, the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, and the Living Legacy Award from the Women's International Center. The City of San Antonio honored her devotion to community service by naming one of the city's river barges, "The General Lil."
