Lulu May (McFall)
Lulu May McFall was born to parents of long Quaker lineage (Bradfield/McFall). She married Harry P. Kennedy in the late 1800s and had four children with him. Harry died young of "consumption", leaving a 26 year old Lulu May to raise their four children. She took in laundry and there was talk of adopting out the children, but after the children begged to keep the family together, they managed to keep the household together. The eldest, Evert, enlisted in military service and served in WWI, returning to marry and have a daughter and continued to live in Washington DC until his death in the 1970s. The eldest daughter, Lena, went to business school after high school and paid her way by staying with a local pastor's family and caring for the children. Elsie, the next in line married at age 16 and the youngest was Fred. It is difficult to find verifiable documentation of what happened to him. in 1917, Lulu remarried to a local man, David Clarence Conley who had 6 children with his wife, before she left her family to move in with a man literally across the street and have more children with him. David was an athiest, and Lulu attended the United Brethren church close to her house. Lena referred to United Brethren as "Quaker Lite". In 1924, Lulu and David, as well as Lena and Joseph, and Elsie and Leonard, and Fred started a cross-country trip to Los Angeles, CA, via a tent city in Alburquerque, NM. Lulu became ill with tuberculosis and died in 1931 in Redlands, CA. She is buried in the old Redlands cemetery in an unmarked grave. One memory from Lena about her mother Lulu was that each spring she would allow herself 10 yards of white cotton muslin fabric from which to make a new dress for Easter. Lena married one of David Conley's sons, Joseph Dewy, Conley.
