McAfee Knob

McAfee Knob is one of the most photographed spots on the Appalachian Trail as it winds its way through Virginia. It's a feature of Catawba mountain located in Catawba, Roanoke County, Virginia. Named after James McAfee. James McAfee was a Scotts-Irish immigrant who settled in the Catawba Valley in the late 1730's.
On July 23, a very pretty woman with an old-fashioned red dress and with red hair will sometimes appear on the knob. Frequently seen by men but not by women, she is supposed to be the spirit of a woman who committed suicide on that date over a hundred years ago. According to the lore, she beckons men to join her in jumping off the edge to their deaths, and supposedly will sometimes try to push them off.
