Bought on eBay, this photo of 1901 Ohio twins is adorable. When they were born, about 1 in every 50 births were twins. Now, one of every 30 births are twins!

I would imagine that the higher twin birth rate we currently enjoy probably has a lot to do with better prenatal care.

What I read said that it is due to two main factors: Older mothers (who tend to have twins more frequently) and fertility treatments.

It's a shame that more often than not cards and photographs bought on eBay as well as postcard fairs don't have any information about the sitter

It makes me sad when family members die or cannot be found and their very very personal belongings, such as these wonderful family photos, aren't united with the living members. I hope a relative living can be found and reunited with the photo. Beautiful picture of twins!

Looks to me also. Fertility drugs these days increase the occurrence of twins , although most are fraternal I think. My father and uncle (and their aunts were identical).

My mom had fraternal twins in '38, a boy & girl. They lived a very short time. My aunt was pregnant with fraternal twins girls. She lost one of them & the other turned out fine. My niece's daughter had twin fraternal boys. I'm sure there are more, these are the only ones I know of. None had fertility treatments.

there is a theory in anthropology that this is "ovum insurance". humans used to twin more often to insure that at least one child made it to reproductive adulthood.
