Aaron Johnson
Rev. Aaron James Johnson, 61, of 1348 8th Ave., East Moline, IL; pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, East Moline, IL; died at 5:45 this morning in Lutheran Hospital after a short illness. Arrangements are pending at Nicholson Funeral Home, Rock Island, IL.
Mr. Johnson, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson, was born Dec. 9, 1901, in Yazoo City, MS; and attended schools in Tuskegee, AL; and Lincoln, PA.
He married Estell Harper in 1949, in Chicago, IL. Mr. Johnson resided in Chicago, IL; for several years and was a former building contractor. He was a member of the Garden City Lodge 59 of Chicago, IL. The couple moved to East Moline 12 years ago.
He had been the pastor of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church for 25 years, commuting from Chicago for the first 13 years of his pastorship. In this area, he was an active member of the Council of Churches of Scott and Rock Island Counties and Council on Human Relations. Mr. Johnson served as chairman of the human relations department for the Baptist General State Convention of Illinois, president-at-large of the Baptist Sunday School Congress and a board member of the National Sunday School Congress. He was a former chairman of the Baptist State Convention.
Surviving is the widow, Estell [Harper] Johnson; two sons, Aaron J. Johnson, Jr., Atlanta, GA; and Harold S. Johnson, Sao Paulo, Brazil, South America; on tour as a concert artist, and a grandchild.
