This is a picture of said to be of my great-great-great-great grandmother . Rhoda"Rosie" or " Rosa" Punhuff-Punthuff-Foothuff or Put-Off , etc . The records in both Estill County, KY and Lee County , VA say she was full blooded cherokee native american indian. She had several children by Crabtree Smyth . In 1838 -she - Crabtree Smyth , Polly Lambert and Robert Armstrong were brought up on adultry charges . She and Crabtree and left her children with his aunt Mary {Smyth} Pennington and "went west with a bunch of indians " which was most prob her family . The story goes they were never heard from again . If anyone has any information PLEASE contact me . I am happy to share with you . Thanks .
Aunt Mary never told anyone Rhoda ran off with a “bunch” of Indians. She was too educated and classy to use the term “bunch” like uneducated mountain would use. In other accounts, Aunt Mary used the term “band of Indians” which would have been more proper and accurate for a lady of her class. Rhoda and Crabtree’s story never fails to bring tears to my eyes. Their story needs to be told in a form of a book. This would make one of the most beautiful non fictional love stories ever told.
