Robert Eugene Grames was born on August 11, 1927 in Elkhart, Indiana, USA to parents Ralph Emerson Grames (1902-1985) and Florence Jane Evans (1902-1997). He was the second of the two children born to his parents following his sister Dorothy Grames Beacham (1925-2019).
He graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1945 and then registered for the military draft on his 18th birthday, August 11, 1945, in Indiana.
Robert's dedication to serving his country led him to enlist in the Regular Army on October 20, 1945, at Camp Atterbury in Columbus, Indiana. He served in the US Army Air Corps until April 15, 1947, when he was honorably discharged.
On June 26, 1949 he married Jean Marie Marks (1928–2015) in Elkhart, Indiana, USA and went on to have three sons together.
