P.O. R.W. Lornie NZ413944. Son of Thomas and Nan Lornie B. April 1921, Auckland, NZ. D. 8th July 1943. EK224 ZB-Y of 247 (China-British Squadron) took off from RAF Bradwell Bay at approx 1600 hrs on July 8th 1943. Whilst attacking at, low level, enemy gun emplacements on the Dutch coast as part of Operation Rhubarb, his plane was hit by heavy defensive fire and crashed in the Western Schelde on a sandbar. His body was recovered from the wreckage by a German patrol boat and he was buried on 12th July in Vlissingen Zeeland, Netherlands: Row F. Grave 21.
