Nevada Governor. Educated in Mechanical Engineering, he moved to Virginia City, Nevada, in 1863 and became a successful mining engineer. He entered public service as a Nevada State Commissioner in 1889 and in 1890, was elected as a Republican the 7th Governor of Nevada, serving until 1895. While in office, a state board of health was established, the Australian ballot system was launched, economic programs were instituted, a first state board of equalization was authorized, the University of Nevada initiated a mechanical engineering department and women's voting rights were lobbied for. After his term, he was appointed as superintendent of the U.S. Nevada Mint, serving (1898-1911). He died in retirement at the age of 100.
