Virginia, What make you think that this picture contains some Watson ancestors. Did not the Trail of Tears take place in the 1830's? And were they not (herded) from Georgia across to Oklahoma? I have a line of Watson's from Alabama, but have not connected to any in Georgia yet. Most of mine came up from Alabama into the Arkansas and MOSTLY Missouri areas and then into the Oklahoma Territories. I never heard of any participating in the Trail of Tears. I do however have a ggggrandfather James Crowley that DID participate in the Trail of Tears. Which this picture had some Crowleys in it. But since I have no pictures from that time, I could not tell you if any of the white men are a Watson, Crowley or whoever. I would like to make a copy of your picture so that I could pass it around the families and maybe one us will find something out.
Thanks
Sheryl D. (Crowley) Stanfill

I can't find any connection to Watsons with this photo. Google Los Pinos Indian Agency and you will find this is a group picture of Ute Indians with Chief Ignacio and John McDonough in the front row. Some history sites have a second photo of the same people arranged in a different configuration in front of the same building. They all say this was taken around 1880 from a Durango photographer. John Taylor, a buffalo soldier (and interpreter) stands in the back row. I have found different versions of the photo (one links it incorrectly to Trail of Tears in the Salem News) labeled as "The Watsons", but I cannot find how it could relate to the Watson family. I think there was a ranch nearby owned by a Watson, but nothing points to any figure in the photo having that last name. Not all figures have been identified yet. But this isn't a family photo. It's a group photo of the Los Pinos Indian Agency in Colorado.
