Varina Winnie Davis, memorial roses
This is a scan of a memento from the funeral of Miss Varina Anne "Winnie" Davis (1864 - 1898.)Winnie was the daughter of the former President of the Confederacy, Jefferson F. Davis and his wife Varina Banks Davis.
My great-grandmother, Ethel Byron Chesterman Johnson may have been acquaintanted with Miss Davis as she grew up on Richmond's West Clay Street, the site of the White House of the Confederacy. The flower and note were pressed within the Ivey / Johnson family Bible. The rose is long gone but the note and wired stem survived.
The note reads:
Roses from head of grave of Miss Winnie Davis in Hollywood on Sept. 23rd, 1898.
