William George Werle Sr.
William George Werle (1920-2010) was a man of many talents, achieving success in both his military service and professional baseball career. He was born and raised in Northern California and attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he played college baseball and earned a degree in Entomology. After completing his education, he enlisted in the US Army in 1945, serving during World War II. Following his military service, Werle went on to play professional baseball as a left-handed pitcher for six seasons (1949 to 1954), with the Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox. Throughout his career, he compiled a lifetime 4.69 ERA and 29 wins and 39 losses in 185 games pitched, earning a reputation as a skilled player and a valuable asset to his teams. After retiring from baseball, Werle continued his involvement in the sport as a minor league manager and special assignment scout for the Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians.
