Altimont Last Name History & Origin
AddSummary
The original spelling was Altomonte. My grandfather, Pasquale Altomonte was born in Agnana Calabria in 1895, a foundling raised by the Marzano family. He left Calabria on the steamer Taormina in 1914 with eleven other men from his town and was briefly quarantined at Ellis Island. He moved to Washington, D.C. and was drafted in 1917 or 1918, at which point the spelling of the name was anglicized to Altimont.
History
Altomonte, which means "high mountain," is actually derived from the German name Hohenberg. The Hohenberg clan arrived in Southern Italy during the early 13th century with Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor. Altomonte, an old town in northern Calabria, was perhaps their Italian power base.
