Obituaries Gladys A. Billings June 30,2011 Email Article Print Article Gladys A. Billings SPRINGFIELD — Gladys Audine Billings, 86, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born August 20, 1924, in Springfield, Vt., the daughter of the late Harold C. and Gladys (Lawrence) Billings. Miss Billings graduated in 1942 from Springfield High School. She attended UVM and the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, Mass. She worked in Boston, Mass., Montpelier, Vt., and at J&L in Springfield, Vt. Gladys will be remembered for her involvement in government and local politics. Because of her great love of town and nation, she wrote many letters to presidents, members of Congress, school and town officials, and letters to the editor. She was concerned with the future of our town and nation, keeping this interest until her passing. Gladys had a beautiful voice and sang for a time in the Methodist Church choir. Her hymnal was kept close and used often. She was an accomplished artist, creating especially many portraits of women and children. Gladys’ hobbies were cooking, sewing, gardening and reading. Her great loves were for children and animals. One of her favorite animals was the neighbor’s cat, “Blacky,” which adopted Gladys. She donated to many organizations which helped orphans, Native Americans and the handicapped.
