History

So far, while awaiting more complete information the story of the Authement family, according to one branch of the family, goes like this:
Paul Authemen was a child when his father Etienne and his mother, Marthe Ardoin, settled in the commune of Martigue, France, in 1670, 18 miles west north west of the city of Marseilles. Information about this can be obtained from the Bouch - du - Rhone archives (mouth of the river).  Etienne was the procurreur (city attorney) of Martigue, France. Paul, his son, became a practicier (pharmacist) in Martigue. On August 13, 1690, he married Jeanne Columbet, a resident of the quarter of Ferriers.

Paul (Sr.) died at Martigue.  Paul's son, Andre, became a huissier (Bailiff) in the Bouche du Rhone Courthouse. Andre married Josephe Touissante Lieutaud and had three known children.  Andre died in Martigue. Andre's son, Jean Nicolas was an ecrivain (author, court reporter, writer of sorts). He married Catherine Mille - Catherine was 19 years old and Jean Nicolas was 31. Jean and Catherine sired 13 children.

A certified letter indicates that Jean Nicolas Authement left France in 1794. Six of his children came with him to America: two daughters, Louison and Barbe and four sons, Gerome or Jerome, Auguste, Pierre and Joseph. (written in the margin) The year Jean Nicolas Authement left France, 1794, was the year Robespierre and Marie Antoinette were guillotined. The Reign of Terror caused by the French Revolution, saw many heads roll off the guillotine. People were very much afraid and this could well be the reason for our family's departure from France. The name of the ship was not shown nor the port of entry but from all indications it landed in New Orleans in 1794.
