Summary

Balayla name is originally of a Jewish family from Damascus, Syria. The previous last name was Zerahia. Mr. Yihia Zerahia was married (to Tsipora - not sure about her name) and a child that was born around 1860 was sick and he passed away as a baby. Another child the family was ill, so mr. Zerahia asked the rabbi how to improve his bad luck. The rabbi decided to apply the "mitzva of chinuy hashem" which means in Hebrew , to change the surname of the family. The rabbi and mr. Zerahia opened the bible and let his finger to move randomly in the bible. Suddenly it stop in the word "Balayla" which means in Hebrew "at night" , they were very happy because that "Zerahia" means "sunshine" and Balayla is the opposite... that means that god had sent him an opposite, new and a good luck !!! That is how the name "Balayla" was created. Note that it has nothing in common with "Balila" families that are not related at all to the "Balayla" . The Balayla family moved from Damascus to Beirut, Lebanon around 1910 , and the son of Yihia Balayla, named Jacov Balayla married to Leila Balayla. Jaacov & Leila's children were: Zaki Balayla (my grandfather) , Halil, Rachel (Saad) , Hasibe (Bodek) , Jamile (Benbagi) , Salha (Kasabe) . Halil Balayla moved to Brazil. His children and grandchildren moved also to Panama , Caracas& Miami. The other son Zaki Balayla and his children and grandchildren moved to Israel, Montreal. The other children of Yaakov were Rachel (Saad) , Hasibe (Bodek) , moved to Israel , Brazil, Argentine.
Another son of Yihia Balayla , was Joseph Balayla. His children moved to Spain, Italy ,Israel. Some descendants moved to Brazil and New York. Balayla family is widespread all over the world, many of them are very successful people. edited by: Dr. isaac Balayla.
