The first immigrant of the Barrus family in Massachusetts was John Barrowe(also spelled other ways) whoi was b in 1609 in England. The surname was changed to Barrow then a few generations later a family except for a couple of children died. The children were taken in by cousins or aunt and uncle. They were told they spelled their name wrong and it was Barrus. It has been that ever since in most of Massachusetts.
There are a lot of Barruses in Utah; some in Idaho, California and NY. I have found that some Barrus went there with one or of the Mormon companies that went there in the 1800s.
One I found in Utah is descended from a half brother of the one I am descended from.
I found a cousin in NY who is descended from Barruses who came through Attleboro. That is not my line but we are cousins.
