James Robert Beers was born on June 2nd, 1807 in Down, Ireland, to Samuel Beers (1770 - 1865) and Eleanor Holcomb (1788 - 1872). He had two brothers, Nathan, born 1813, and Edmund, born 1828.
James R. Beers married Jane Ferguson (1913 - 1890) in 1827 in Ireland. They had nine children: Catherine, Samuel, John, Eleanor, James, Margeret, Alex, Robert, and Elizabeth. Two more children, Ellen and Sarah, both died.
James immigrated to the United States in 1827, first moving to Missouri and then to Louisiana. Later, he moved to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and purchased farming land (106 acres).
A successful business man, he died in July of 1888 at the age of 81. He is buried in Old Union Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Mars, Butler County, Pennsylvania.
