Unfortunately I have no genealogical story for. But I had to laugh, when I saw the page of your friend Wehr and was looking on your name, because my grandmother Dorothea Wehr married 1904 my grandfather
Johann Wilhelm Bentfeld (Bendfeldt) in Riepsdorf near Lensahn (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany).
In he district of Schleswig-Holstein there are two villages with that name (Bentfeld, Bendfeld), a thrid is near Paderborn an is now part of the little town of Delbrück. There is also a place (Benfeld) in the Elsaß (Alsace) and at least one village in England (Bentfield).
Even todday some persons, who don`t know me, believe I`m called Benfeld and in Scotland I was often called Benfield.
The name means a field with a certain sort of hard, blue grass, which is growing on wet fields. In German this sort is called Pfeifengras or Rasenschmiele or Bentgras. I don´t know the latin name.
The first aristocratic owner of Bendfeld called himselv "von Benvelde".
I hope, that this has been interesting for you, though it certainly did not help you in your genealogical search.
With best wishes
Ulrich Bentfeld, Hamburg
