Name Origin

Extract from our family history narrative about the origin of the Borglin name of Otto Julius Mansson upon separating from the Swedish Navy. In 1900 the Swedish military offered separating members to change their surnames in an effort to expand Swedish family names from the age-old patronymic naming traditions: "After discharge from the Swedish Navy in about 1900, Otto Julius Mansson adopted his new family name 'Borglin' by the authority of the government program. Otto’s mother, Ahna Jonsdotter [Mansson], suggested the name ‘Borglin’ so that Otto would always remember the place of his family’s servitude at Castle Borringe in Gustaf (Borg meaning a castle or high place) with the fields of flax (Lin) surrounding it. From that point on Otto went by his new name of Otto Julius Mansson Borglin, or Otto J. M. Borglin as he signed his name. None of Otto’s siblings took the name Borglin because they did not qualify as Swedish military veterans."
