Ethel Brobston “Brobie” was a great friend to my family in Geneva Illinois. She was an RN who was assigned as a “house mother” and mentor to my Mom Edith “Tang” Anderson (right out of nursing school) who was a nurse with Brobie at Geneva Community Hospital. She was like another Grandmother to me and my brothers, Bob and Tom and spent most holidays with us. She lived in an apartment over by the Frank Burgesses. She died when I was in my first year of college. I know her family was from Iowa, but she never married.
She came over anytime she could and let herself in and started doing my chores. It was not unusual to find her in a blouse and my Dad’s boxer shorts when it was especially hot outside and we LIVED outside all summer. She was always trying to keep the peace with me and my two older brothers and I had her on my side when they were bullying me - which was often. She was just part of the family and we loved her. She was such a caring person and took great delight in being part of our family.
