The word Briton originates from Britain. Native Celtic people of Britain being referred to as the Britons by Romans. Variations in the word began to occur after the Saxon conquest of England. This is because many native Britons fled to escape the violence raging across England.

Many Britons fled to the French coast, where they established modern day Brittany. From this, the surname Breton evolved. Other Britons fled further, to the northern coast of Spain (Galicia), where they established the settlement of Britonia. It is in Britonia where the surname Broton evolved.

However, unlike Brittany, Britonia and its Britons were linguistically and territorially assimilated into the Visigoth Kingdom which they had settled in. Nevertheless, the culture which the Britons brought with them survives and flourishes to this day in modern Galicia, where even the place-name Britonia still survives in the same of a handful of villages.
